Grammar

Grammar is both explicitly taught and woven into the writing units to provide opportunities to apply their learning. Pupils' learning in grammar is assessed formatively by teachers through the weekly writing sessions and used to create bespoke targets for children and through a summative termly standardised grammar test.

Modelling and metacognition

Nasty writing

'Nasty writing' is a short explicit teaching of a grammar skill, followed by a short burst opportunity to apply the skill at a word or sentence level. This is part of the writing lesson at least twice a week.

Slow writing

Slow writing is used within the unit sequence to scaffold the grammar within the taught genre.
